Description

This workshop explored workforce development, training, leadership and capacity building in Family Medicine and Primary Health Care, with a focus on the East African and broader regional context. The activity brought together family physicians, educators, health system leaders and other stakeholders to reflect on current workforce and training challenges, share experiences, and identify opportunities to strengthen family medicine training and leadership. The programme included expert presentations, a panel discussion on workforce and training issues, reflections from Kenya Association of Family Physicians Annual Conference attendees on barriers and facilitators to Family Medicine training, an interactive workshop on capacity building and leadership in primary care, and poster presentations showcasing relevant experiences and innovations.

Objectives

1. Describe key workforce and training challenges affecting the development of Family Medicine and Primary Health Care in East Africa. 2. Discuss barriers and facilitators to effective Family Medicine training programmes and identify approaches for strengthening training capacity. 3. Examine the role of leadership and capacity building in strengthening Family Medicine and primary care services. 4. Reflect on regional experiences and lessons from Family Medicine training, workforce development and primary care leadership. 5. Identify practical strategies for strengthening the Family Medicine workforce, training systems and leadership capacity within their respective settings.
