Description

The training/CME focused on Neonatal Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH), a serious brain injury that primarily affects preterm and very low birth weight infants. The presentation emphasized that IVH is often preventable through standardized perinatal and NICU practices and highlighted the importance of early recognition, prevention, neuroimaging surveillance, management, and quality improvement initiatives. The activity included a review of the developmental anatomy of the preterm brain, risk factors, pathophysiology, prevention bundles, diagnosis through cranial ultrasound, management of complications such as post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD), family-centered care, and long-term neurodevelopmental follow-up. A case study of a preterm infant with progressive ventricular dilatation was used to demonstrate practical application of evidence-based IVH prevention and management strategies.

Objectives

Explain the developmental anatomy and pathophysiology of neonatal IVH. Identify infants at highest risk and recognize early signs of deterioration. Apply evidence-based cranial ultrasound screening and surveillance strategies. Implement practical IVH prevention measures from the delivery room through NICU care. Interpret IVH severity, ventricular dilatation, and prognostic indicators. Appropriately escalate management of post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation and coordinate neurosurgical care. Develop measurable quality improvement indicators to reduce the incidence and severity of IVH within the NICU.
